The Bandshell was conceived by a team of artists seeking to create a civic-minded structure that would have a multifaceted impact on its audience. So, why a bandshell? And why make it out of recycled and repurposed materials?
The Bandshell was first and foremost intended to be a public performance stage, in hopes that it would engender community, interactive experiences, and creative self-expression. Seen from afar, this is the initial impact it has on the viewer, as a beautiful performance stage.
And yet, as one approachhes the structure, the individual material elements come into focus, and the realization hits that these are car hoods, and plastic water bottles, and computer circuit boards, and French doors -- it strikes with full force that this structure was created from materials that have been diverted from the waste stream to be made into something functional and beautiful.
Our purpose for creating the Bandshell was to create something at once useful and inspiring, that would educate as much as it encourages creative self-expression. If even one person starts to think about the "trash" around them differently as a result of having experienced the Bandshell, then we have achieved our purpose.
